SANATORIUM's third Zoom Talk event takes place on May 9, Saturday 18:30 (Istanbul, GMT+3). Mehmet Dere and Yunus Emre Erdoğan will revisit ''Hopeless Emptiness'' that took place in SANATORIUM in February 2018, and share their impression on current situation with the moderation of Seda Yavuz. This event will be held in Turkish. The exhibition’s conceptual framework has been developed by Mehmet Dere who also participates in the exhibition as an artist along with Yunus Emre Erdoğan, İsmail Şimşek and Nezaket Ekici. The exhibition title “Hopeless Emptiness” draws its strength from hope rather than emphasizing a pessimistic mood. This hope is the ability to be confronted with hopelessness emphasized in the sense of the artist’s credo. One can say that artists, in a sense, manifest this understanding. The artist is the one who expresses the inability to transform ‘emptiness’, the anxiety, the collapse or, on the contrary, the ineffability of this. The reality quotient of the artist is, in this sense, within the ‘emptiness’ that s/he has created.
About The Participants

Mehmet Dere
Mehmet Dere was born in 1979 in İzmir. He graduated from Faculty of Fine Arts, Painting Department at Dokuz Eylül University. He completed his MA in the same faculty and now studying his PhD in Faculty of Arts and Design, Painting Department at Sakarya University. The language that the artist creates in his work exists in an area of many (sociological-psychological) layers that touch one another. The conceptual framework of Dere’s early works exists in a political area and deals with the socio-political history of Turkey, its multi-culturalism, identity and creating multi-vocality in terms of belonging and cultural democratization. In terms of form, Dere generally produces installations through which he can reach the whole from smaller parts. Dere uses objects, photos, charcoal patterns and object installations in order to create a personal archive (narrative) in a sense. Also, he creates objects based upon the social memory and senses and work on video. In his own words, Dere likes to collect “invisible stories” while creating his works. For the artist, a whole is travelling in time composed of small episodes. Dere constantly feeds his work in this way in their reckoning with and creating reality. Deriving from Turkey’s cultural history, the exhibition consists of a series of ironic and upfront constructions, focusing on a research of local and social memory. While the artist builds his work with the retrieved images of the cultural memory, he poetically includes his own subjectivity to all these captivities. Issues of social injustice, resistance and politics of survival are raised not through the artist’s observation as an outsider, but from close range; a perspective precisely constructed by the practices of life. This stance, at times tragicomic, and at times built upon the relationship of patience and suffering, is tackled to be presented to the audience time and again, uninterrupted, and almost prayer like. Looking at Turkey’s cultural history, while focused on memory, individual and social identity research, the recent work shows an abstract trend towards poetic lyricism fed by internal reality.
Yunus Emre Erdoğan
In his studies, Yunus Emre Erdoğan directs his gaze towards places and objects. The subjects which he deals with in his pictures are light and space, details which attract his attention. His works, which are predominantly in charcoal, are endowed with an atmosphere which is as intense as it is tranquil. The spatial elements in the details at times break free from formalism to display a reductionist attitude. Born in 1988, the artist completed his bachelor’s degree at Dokuz Eylul University Fine Arts Faculty Dept. of Painting in 2011 and is currently enrolled in the MA program of the same department. Yunus Emre Erdoğan lives and works in Istanbul. Recent exhibitions and events he participated in include: Solo Exhibition: ''Horizon of Things'', SANATORIUM, Istanbul (2018), "Sounds of Secrecy” SANATORIUM, Istanbul (2015). The Language Habitat: an Ecopoetry Manifesto

The Language Habitat: an Ecopoetry Manifesto By James Engelhardt Ecopoetry is connection. It’s a way to engage the world by and through language. This poetry might be wary of language, but at its core believes that language is an evolved ability that comes from our bodies, that is close to the core of who we are in the world. Ecopoetry might borrow strategies and approaches from postmodernism and its off-shoots, depending on the poet and their interests, but the ecopoetic space is not a postmodern space. An ecopoem might play with slippages, but the play will lead to further connections. Ecopoetry does share a space with science. One of the concerns of ecopoetry is non-human nature (it shares this concern with the critical apparatus it borrows from, ecocriticism). It certainly shares that concern with most of the world’s history of poetry: How can we connect with non-human nature that seems so much more, so much larger than ourselves? How can we understand it? One way
