In his works Mehmet is interested in analyzing the history and making interventions in the way it is presented in the official history books and schoolbooks, constantly being aware of the state apparatus that is behind the creation of the official history.

For the trip through the Balkans, he was talking with local people about these issues, until he found old books in Prizren about the Second World War and the Partizan’s involvement between 1943-45. The books illustrate the resistance of the latter Socialists against the Nazi’s. This book was also used as a schoolbook in the Yugoslavian education.

Respiration/ breathe in Turkish language is a notion with double meaning: it’s first meaning is breath/ breathing but it is also the word used for the break in the elementary school. In his work Mehmet is creating complex connections in his attempt of understanding the Yugoslavian era through the schoolbooks he found. He is referring to the quote of seeing
the peace and the prosperity of the state as excess in the continual struggle before and after Tito’s era. In his work, he is creating a historical event by connecting the quotes from Tito and the images of the propaganda schoolbooks with the very personal verse of the lyrics by Lord Byron.

These four books about the most important battles fro the Partizans -Desanti Ne Dervar, Neretva, Kozara and Sutjeska- made him aware of the fear and terror that lies within the official history. He documents the pages that he has selected from these children’s books and juxtaposes them with the last verse of Lord Byron’s poem “When we two parted”: With silence and tears.

Byron is symbolizing the lonely and lyric hero surrounding the Partizan spirit.The conflicts and the bourgeois-patriot attitude in the works of Byron emanates from the contradictions of his sympathy towards the public masses, his hatred towards the feudal
bigotry, his anarchist/individualist attitude and his profound pessimism. He connects the children books with this notion and with the element of a romanticized revolutionary time.

Re-LOCATE Exhibition

Re- Locate

The theoretical framework of the Re- Locate project is based on the population exchange between Anatolia and the Balkans and it focuses on the flexibility of the borders, cultural similarities, controversies, the lack of communication between cultures, as well as various methods of developing new communication models. In addition, the project aims at establishing a new network between artists, curators, writers and institutions by making the shared history in the selected places its most important guide. This network also intends to form a dialogue between peripheral places, small-scale cultural centers, and artists.

Re- Locate Project proposes an experimental workshop practice that is based on mobility and translocation. The suggested mobility tries to en- compass the physical transitivity of the cities and borders, as well as the flexibility of historical, identitarian, and ideological borders.

Re- Locate project consists of a series of workshops that are realized in this framework. The first part of the series is realized in Plovidiv, Athens, Skopje, Prizren, and Pristine with the participation of Gökçe Süvari, Ha za vu zu (Özgür Erkök, Güneş Terkol), Ilgın Seymen, Mehmet Dere, Suat Öğüt, and Zeyno Pekünlü. The group worked in collaboration with the local artists in the places that they visited. They worked on both their individual works and collective works and shared their experiences with each other.

The second workshop is realized in Istanbul with the participation of the artists who were invited to Istanbul from the places that are visited: Alban Muja, Gjorgje Jovanovik, Mary Zygoury, and Raycho Stanev.
The third workshop, after the visiting artists have left, was based on dis- cussing the ways in which different works will be put together for the exhibition and the collective preparation of the book which was thought to be an alternative method to share the experiences with the audience.

Selda Asal, together with Gökçe Süvari, coordinated the project since the beginning; she also documented various spontaneous moments, momentary inputs of information and experience during the whole project. These documentations follow the project step by step and show it to the
audience in a non-conventional way. This method suggests that the exhibition should be read not only through the final results but also through the whole process of realizing it.

The dialogue that was established with people in the visited places is a significant step in making the already existing links more visible than be- fore. The meetings and conversations during the workshops are crucial in figuring out the strategies of survival and artistic production that the artists who are geographically close use, as well as learning the ways in which they perceive their surroundings and other similarities between geographies. All these concerns inspire us to put forward alternative answers to the question: “what else brings us together apart from geography?” and to develop new ways of communicating.

Re- Locate project can be seen as a step to share these experiences with the audience and to keep discussing these issues.

Re- Locate project is supported by X-OP. X-OP is a constantly expand- ing network that brings artists, researchers, operators, producers, and cultural institutions together to form a common European platform for artistic production. On the one hand, it strengthens collaboration and common production practices within Europe and an interdisciplinary perspective in art. On the other hand, it reinforces the participants’ mobility with its users who are well-informed on the technological infrastructure. This is a portrait of Lord Byron in Albanian dress by Thomas Phillips, ca. Lord Byron was among the most famous of the English 'Romantic' poets; his contemporaries included Percy Shelley and John Keats. He was also a satirist whose poetry and personality captured the imagination of Europe. His major works include Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage (1812-18) and Don Juan (1819-24). He died of fever and exposure while engaged in the Greek struggle for independence.

The exhibition Quid rides? De te fabula narratur references to the vague nature of concepts that comprise the multipartite, multilayered structures, such as Turkish history, memory and identity. This in-betweenness which is conceptually situated somewhere between crying and laughter, strives to construct an impartial fictitious language and a transparent context in this geography where everything is interconnected within everything.

Deriving from Turkey’s cultural history, the exhibition consists of a series of ironic and upfront constructions, focusing on a research of local and social memory. While the artist builds his work with the retrieved images of the cultural memory, he poetically includes his own subjectivity to all these captivities.

Issues of social injustice, resistance and politics of survival are raised not through the artist’s observation as an outsider, but from close range; a perspective precisely constructed by the practices of life. This stance, at times tragicomic, and at times built upon the relationship of patience and suffering, is tackled to be presented to the audience time and again, uninterrupted, and almost prayer like.

In this respect, Dere’s works recall a black box. A series of cultural and historical images retrieved by the artist are combined in the light of polyphonic references, to either be eventually monumentalized, or to evoke lost and found museums as a catalogued construct.

This holistic structure in which each object is conceptualized as a question mark, transforming into collective memory, constitutes the visual anthology of the artist.

Our government is trying to censor the Internet. A new regulation would force every single Internet user in Turkey to submit to extensive content filtering when they go online.

The BTK is pushing regulations that would force each of us to choose between one of four Internet filters that block us from accessing hundreds of words and websites. No computer in the country will have access to the Internet without signing up for this censorship. And, to top it off -- the government will not release the list of websites blocked by each filter.

The new system is a violation of our right to freedom of expression and access to information, and it has absolutely no legal basis under Turkish law. The BTK is under enormous pressure already, facing backlash from across the country. BTK's Internet censorship violates the European Convention on Human Rights and the Turkish constitution. And yet they're still trying to force it through.

The BTK claims they are providing families with an important service, and that if we choose the "standard" filter, our Internet access won't change. The filters are already readily available for download by anyone who wishes to install them -- this regulation will make filters mandatory. The BTK would have total control over which internet sites are blocked under the filters and could add or remove sites without our knowledge -- giving them the power to ban thousands of new websites without any good reason.

Re-Locate Projesi kavramsal çerçevesini Anadolu ve Balkanlar arasında
gerçekleşen mübadele döneminden alarak, sınırların değişkenligi,
kültürel ortaklıklar, ihtilaflar, iletişim eksikliği ve yeni iletişim
biçimleri kurabilme yöntemlerine odaklanıyor. Proje icin seçilen
mekanlarla olan ortak tarihel gecmiş bir yol haritasi teşkil etmesinin
dışında sanatsal anlamda kurulabilecek sanatçılar, küratörler,
yazarlar ve kurumlar arası bir ağa temel oluşturma, ana merkezler
dışında kalan alanlar ya da küçük merkezler arasında ve sanatçilar
arası diyaloğu hedeflemekte.

Proje, (öngörülen) 2 Mayıs – 23 Mayıs tarihleri arasında Filibe
(BG), Atina (GR), Üsküp (Makedonya) ve Priştina’da (Kosova)
gerçekleştirilecek bir seri workshoptan oluşacak. Proje çerçevesinde
sanatçılar birlikte karayolu ile seyahat ederek sınırları fiziksel
anlamda deneyimlemelerinin yanı sıra gittikleri mekanlardaki sanatçılar
vb. ile ortak projeler üretmeleri ve iletişim olanaklarını
tartışmaları amaçlanmakta.

Proje, gidilen her mekanda yaklaşık 4-5 gunluk sureçlerde oluşacak
workhoplar ve projeye partner kurumlarda yapılacak sunumlardan oluşacak.

Workshop sonrasi partner kurumlardan 4-5 adet sanatci Apartman Projesi’ne
1 aylık residency icin davet edilecek.

Projenin sonuçlandırılması;
Re-locate icin deneyimler, gozlemler, bölgeye, konuya hakim
yazarların-eleştirmenlerin katkıları, kurulan networkingler ve
sanatçıların çalışmalarıdan oluşan bir yayın hazırlanıp Apartman
Projesi’nde bir tanıtım toplantısı gerçekleştirilmesi
hedeflenmekte.

Sergi;
Katılımcı sanatçıların çalışmalarını kapsayan bir sergi, proje
ile ilgili bir sunum eşliğinde gerçekleştirilecek. (Tarihler
belirlenecek)

Re-locate çerçevesinde gidilen mekanlardaki local sanatçılar, yazarlar,
küratörler gibi sanat alanında etkinlik gösterenlerle ortak
çalışmalar üretilmesi AP için önemli unsurlardan biri olmakla beraber
bireysel projeler de dahil edilebilecek.

Fine artist and graphic designer Scott Listfield paints astronauts, and sometimes dinosaurs. Above and below are vivid oil paintings featuring his recurring, watchful but detached, lone space voyager from Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. Scott’s narrative in this ongoing series is brilliant. His astronaut protagonist is seen observing and exploring our 21st century culture—emotionless and isolated, walking through an unfamiliar environ of corporate logos and urbanity.

Artist statement:

Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey was released in 1968, which was about 8 years before I was born, so I have no firsthand knowledge of how it was received. I do not know if people genuinely believed we’d be living in space in 2001. If we’d have robot butlers and flying cars, geodesic lunar homes with sustainable gardens, and genetically reconstituted dinosaurs helping or eating the human population. But from Lost in Space to the Jetsons to Jurassic Park, it seems that popular culture craved and fomented this space-age perception of the future. Generations raised on these programs, movies, comic books, and novels are now grown and living in a future filled with mini vans, Starbucks, iMacs, and Hip Hop videos. In many ways, the year 2001, like 1984 before it, failed to live up to expectations. In hindsight, these expectations appear almost comical. And yet the world today is strange and unusual in ways unimagined in 1957, when Sputnik was launched, or in 1968, when 2001 was released, or even in 1990 at the dawn of the world wide web. The present is in fact a very unusual place, and it’s strangest in the ubiquity of things we take for granted.

görünürlüğünü düşünerek K2’nin bizden sonra da devam etmesini istemiştik. K2 isminin
kullanılması ve mekanın bizler olmaksızın devam etmesinde bir sakınca görmedik, ancak
yakın zamanda yaşanan bir sansür girişimine Ayşegül Kurtel dolayısıyla K2 taraf olduğu
için verdiğimiz karara dair endişe duyuyoruz.

Paris’teki Centre Pompidou koleksiyonundan eserlerin sergileneceği, 6 Mayıs’da Fransız
Kültür Merkezi aracılığıyla İzmir’de, Ayşegül Kurtel’in tahsis ettiği Türk-Avusturya
Tütün Deposu’nda açılması planlanan Centre Pompidou, Video Sanatı Koleksiyonu,
1965-2010 başlıklı sergiden Berat Işık, Erkan Özgen ve Köken Ergun’un ayrılmaları
talep edilmiş, gerekçe olarak politik nedenler gösterilmiştir. İzmir Fransız Kültür Merkezidirektörü Jean Luc Maeso ve K2’nin yöneticisi Ayşegül Kurtel bu sansür girişimi
başlatmış ve duyarlılık göstermeyen Centre Pompidou da bu sansüre göz yummuştur.

K2 ile hiçbir ilgimiz olmadığını ve bu konuya duyarsız kalamayacağımızı beyan ediyoruz. Sorumluların yasakçı yaklaşımlarını kınıyoruz.

Bu girişimin ardından K2 ve İzmir Fransız Kültür Merkezi’nin Türkiye’yi daha iyi temsil
edeceğine inandıkları ulusal katılımlı bir sergi düzenlemeyi planladıklarını öğrenmiş
bulunmaktayız.

Tüm sanatçıları, bahsi geçen sansür girişimine ve ‘daha iyi’ temsiliyet
üzerinden gerekliliği açıklanan bu etkinlik tasarısına dair bilgilendirmek isteriz. Bu
nedenle sanatçılardan K2 ile çalışırken bu duruma dikkat etmelerini ve bu tarz bir ulusal temsil içeren sergiye katılmamalarını rica ediyoruz.

.....In his work “Imminence of Desire”, Çağlayan spells out Istanbul’s name given by the cultures which desire the city. And he does it by means of panels and boards we see in airports. The artist believes that the city is always through a continuous flow today as well as in past. In thousands of years, Istanbul had more than 150 names. Every name reflected the bound of that culture with the city. Different cultures at different times protected the city’s identity and claimed what it represented for them.

The lower road on the small avenue seemed to meet a line, with a lengthy beginning, between Iran and Caldiran. The stacking of the cigarettes upon one another appeared to turn these packets into towers. I don't know what seduced me then, but maybe it was 'something/a sign' that I hid inside myself 'unkowing/aware' that it would turn into something else. Life has a death-like symbolism of its own, it makes itself seen through its skill of turning us into a 'thing' which it sticks in its pocket to take out whenever necessary. Life presented this to me as one on the dull, gleaming, mocking, unimposing surfaces of the cigarette towers. One was multitude, and the same was different.

I remember staring at a page while browsing, and returning to it again and again. Something happened inside me that I couldn't grasp. Perhaps in my eyes, it had the power of prophecy. Had I suddenly entered the world of Warhol? Without knowing what was happening, I had discovered the eternity that was transient in his world, just for once...Heaven and Hell were only a breath away...I was to recreate the work, and this I did with the life I was within, and the ever-changing visions of my life...love from Chirico..

3 Mart – 7 Nisan 2011 tarihleri arasında, Ticaret Yolları isimli sergi ile farklı coğrafyalardan sanatçılar Pi Artworks Galeri 1 ve 2’ye misafir oluyor.

Bu gezici sergi, sanatçıları “Ticaret Yolları”nı; ticaret, hareketlilik ve çeviri üzerine söylemler geliştirmek için, eylemsel ve şiirsel bir çıkış noktası olarak düşünmeye davet ediyor. Farklı şehirlerde bulunan ticari galerilerde duraklayacak olan sergiye, Almanya İngiltere, İran, İsviçre, İtalya ve Türkiye’den sanatçılar katılıyor. Hareket ve değişim kavramları etrafında olgunlaşan uluslarası diyalogu ve evrimleşerek dile gelişini kayda geçirecek.

“Ticaret Yolu”, uluslararası güncel durumu değerlendirmek için, hareketlilik ve kültürlerarası alış-verişin tarihsel bir modeli olarak öneriliyor. Ticaret Yolu, ulus-devletin sınırlarını ve küreselleşme talebini sınayan bir metafor olarak düşünülebilir. Sergi, güncel ticaretin gayri-maddileşerek bilgi ekonomisine yönelmesi; demiryolları, otoyollar ve boru hatları gibi fiziksel ağların, dijital ağlarla; fiziksel objelerin bilgiyle katmanlandığı durumu incelemeyi amaçlıyor.

Appadurai’nin ‘scapes’ yani “küresel manzaranın akıcı ve başıbozuk şekilleri” tanımını, küresel hareketlilik etrafındaki bilgi, artan insan dolaşımı, kaynaklar ve bilginin hareketi ve akışlardan oluşan ağların yarattığı bir mekan algısı (Harvey), coğrafyaları konumlarından ziyade birbiri ile ilişki içinde düşünme; bu dünyaya nasıl uyum sağlayabileceğimiz, haraket edebileceğimiz ve etkin olacağımız konusundaki yeni teşkilatlanmayı sunuyor.

Yol üzerindeki ilk durak, İstanbul, etrafımızda varolan akış ve güçler arasında geçici bir ada oluşturacak; fiziksel tezahürlere, etkileşim ve geçici bir boşluğa izin veren bir tıkama mevzii haline gelecek ve sergi yoluna devam edecek. This touring/developing exhibition invites artists to consider Trade Routes as an actual and poetic departure point for a discourse on trade, mobility, and translation. The exhibition will be stopping at galleries in multiple cities, and features works by artists from the UK, Switzerland, Germany, Turkey, Italy and Iran. It will chart a developing international dialogue and evolving articulation of the core concept of movement and transformation. The invited Artists have responded to or will present work that engages with these concerns.

“Trade Route” is suggested here as a historical model of mobility and cultural exchange in relation to current international conditions. Notionally Trade Route can be seen as a system to challenge the borders of the nation state and the claims of globalization. It aims to consider the contemporary immaterialisation of commerce towards a knowledge economy, the replacement of physical systems such as railroads and highways by digital networks and ceaseless information.

The resultant fragmentation of lived reality and dislocation of individual experience from societal narratives of consequence through these disembodied and de-located exchanges make it harder to connect action with consequence. How do we identify the mechanisms perpetuating this increased precariousness, in effect a hyper-exploitation and mobility within our industries? How are we as artists implicit in and effected by these processes? It is therefore urgent to articulate subjective attitudes in relation to this condition, the question of the contexts of production. How do our individual geographies and narratives shape our actions, representations and impressions as artists? When these manifestations of situated knowledge come into contact, how do they translate? What position can radical culture now credibly occupy?
This show will take into account Appadurai suggestion of ‘scapes’ as “fluid and irregular shapes of the global landscape”, global mobility, the increased numbers of people in circulation, the movement of resources and information and an understanding of space as a network of flows (Harvey) and geographies as existing in ‘relation’ instead of location.
The show will make its first stop on route in Istanbul. It will create a temporary island amidst the flows and forces in operation, a choke point allowing for a temporal hiatus, a physical manifestation and investigation of these concerns. This pause is part of a series of stops, a decisive moment and articulation that will then travel and relocate to a new city, evolving and reformatting as it goes.

Tunus ve Mısır’daki ayaklanmalarda göze çarpmaması imkansız bir şey Müslüman köktenciliğin bariz bir şekilde yokluğuydu. Halk laik demokratik geleneğin en güzel örneklerinde görüldüğü gibi, yalnızca baskıcı bir rejime, onun yolsuzluklarına ve yoksulluğa karşı ayaklandı ve özgürlük ve ekonomik umut talep etti. Batılı liberallerin, Arap ülkelerinde gerçek demokratiklik anlayışının sadece dar bir liberal elit kesimle sınırlı olduğu ve büyük kitlelerin sadece dini köktencilik, ya da milliyetçilik saikleriyle harekete geçebileceği yolundaki negatif inancının yanlış olduğu kanıtlandı.

Büyük soru ise şu: Şimdi ne olacak? Bu işin içinden siyasi olarak kim kazançlı çıkacak?

Tunus’da yeni bir geçici hükümet atandığında, İslamcıları ve daha radikal solu dışladı. Bilgiç liberallerin tepkisi: “İyi, ikisi de aynı kapıya çıkar, iki totaliteryen aşırılık” şeklinde oldu. Açıkça köktenci hareketler söz konusu olduğunda bile sosyal bileşenleri gözden kaçırmamak için dikkatli olmalıyız. Taliban devamlı olarak düzenini terörle koruyan İslami köktenci bir grup olarak sunulur. Ne var ki 2009 yılının baharında Pakistan’ın Swat Vadisini ele geçirdiklerinde New York Times, Taliban’ın “küçük bir grup toprak sahibi ile onların topraksız kiracısı köylüler arasındaki derin çatlaklardan yararlanmak suretiyle bir sınıf isyanı” yarattığını yazmıştı. Eğer Taliban, “köylülerin çektiği acılardan yararlanarak” New York Times’ın deyişiyle “çoğunlukla feodal kalan Pakistan açısından tehlike çanları” çaldırıyorduysa, acaba Pakistan ve ABD’deki liberal demokratların da aynı şekilde bu acilardan “yararlanarak” topraksız köylülere yardım etmeye çalışmasına kim engel oluyordu? Pakistan’daki feodal güçler liberal demokrasinin doğal müttefikleri miydi yoksa?

Çıkarılması kaçınılmaz olan sonuç şu ki, Müslüman ülkelerde radikal İslamcılığın yükselişi madalyonun bi yüzüyse diğer yüzü de laik solun yokoluşudur. Afganistan dünyanın en İslami köktenci ülkesi olarak tanımlanırken, bundan 40 yıl önce bu ülkede, Sovyetler Birliği’nden bağımsız olarak iktidarı ele geçirmiş güçlü bir komünist partinin de içinde bulunduğu kuvvetli bir laik gelenek olduğunu hatırlayan kalmış mıdır? Nereye gitti bu laik gelenek?

Ve Tunus ile Mısır (ve Yemen ve belki de hatta inşallah Suudi Arabistan’da) süregiden olayları bu arka planı gözönüne alarak okumak çok önemli. Eğer durum bir süre sonra istikrar kazanır ve eski rejim bir takim kozmetik liberal operasyonlarla ayakta kalırsa, bu başaçıkılması zor bir köktenci tepki dalgası yaratacaktır. Bu hareketten geriye temel bir liberal miras kalabilmesi için liberallerin radikal solun kardeş yardımına ihtiyacı var. Mısır’a dönersek bu konudaki en utanç verici ve çok tehlikeli bir fırsatçılık sergileyen tepki Tony Blair’in CNN’de aktarılan sözleriydi: “değişim gereklidir ama bu istikrarlı bir değişim olmalıdır” dedi.

Mısır’da bugün istikrarlı değişim yalnızca Mübarek güçleriyle yönetici çemberi hafifçe genişletmek üzere bir uzlaşma anlamına gelebilir. İşte bu yüzden şu anda Mısır’da barışçı değişimden söz etmek ayıptır: Mübarek bizzat muhalefeti ezme yoluna giderek bunu imkansız hale getirmiştir. Mübarek orduyu göstericilerin üzerine gönderdikten sonra seçenekler netleşti: Ya herşeyin aynı kalabilmesi için bir şeyin değiştirildiği kozmetik bir değişim, ya da gerçek bir kopuş.

İşte gerçeklerin anlaşılacağı an: Bundan on yıl önce Cezayir’de olduğu gibi serbest seçimlere izin verilmesinin iktidarı Müslüman köktencilere teslim etmek anlamına geleceği öne sürülemez. Bir başka liberal kaygı ise Mübarek giderse yerini alabilecek örgütlü bir siyasi gücün bulunmaması. Tabii ki yok. Mübarek bütün muhalefeti marjinalleştirmeyi başardı, öyle ki sonuç Agatha Christie’nin meşhur On Küçük Zenci romanındaki gibi sonunda geriye hiç kimsenin kalmaması oldu. Mübarek’den yana kullanılan, ya o ya da kaos olur tezi aslında tam da onun aleyhine bir tezdir.

Batılı liberallerin iki yüzlülüğü nefes kesice: Açıkça demokrasiyi savundular, ve şimdi halk din adına değil, laik bir özgürlük ve adalet talebiyle tiranlara karşı ayaklandığında, büyük bir kaygıya düştüler. Neden dertleniyorsunuz? Neden özgürlüğe bir şans verilmesine sevinmiyorsunuz? Mao Zedong’un eski bir sözü bugün her zamankinden daha fazla yerine oturuyor: “Göğün altında büyük bir kaos var-şahane bir durum.”

Mübarek nereye gidecek o zaman? Bunun cevabı da gayet net. Lahey’e. Eğer Lahey’e gitmeyi hakeden bir lider varsa o da Mübarek’tir

A Postcard from Izmir

Aside from the harrowing depiction of the city burning and the plight of refugees during the 1920s Greco-Turkish war in Jeffrey Eugenides’ novel Middlesex (2002), I didn’t know much about Izmir before going there. But given the stated aim of the second installment of ‘Portizmir 2’, their contemporary art triennial, to produce not only an exhibition but also ‘a dialogue between contemporary art and the people in the city’, I knew that would have to change. Luckily for me Turkey’s second biggest port after Istanbul, and third largest urban centre, is welcoming to strangers and trade. Intertwined historical, cultural, social, political and religious conflicts, and myriad contradictions that they give rise to, are rife in contemporary Turkey. That country’s current high-energy state – propelled by a young aspiring population realigning in a rapidly restructuring and growing economy – has only served to make them all the more palpable. Izmir is no exception and on every corner its historically patchwork, multi-layered urban fabric bears testimony to struggle and change both past and present.

The work presented by the seven TR based artists is the fifth part in a series of international deadpan exchanges, which began in Denmark and Berlin in the summer of 2007. In each of the shows, the artists are actively involved in a give-and-take of deadpan communication… a sort of classic comedy exchange. The work exhibited here at Cultural Center CK by the seven Turkish artists is a reaction to the work of the seven US based artists, who exhibited in Izmir at K2 Contemporary Art Center in April of 2009 for Deadpan Exchange III.

Deadpan is a form of comic delivery in which humor is presented without a change in emotion or facial expression, usually speaking in a monotonous manner. This puts the burden of interpretation on the viewer. Is the scene comedy or tragedy?

From an art historical standpoint, the shows take their cure from the deadpan strategies employed by artists in the early 1970’s throughout much of the world: Yoko Ono, Martha Rosler, Bas Jan Ader, Vito Acconci, Gordon Matta Clark, Lygia Clark and Hélio Oiticica… to name a few. Their works were a formal rejection of the institutions, the world of “Modern Art,” in favor of a more democratic interaction with the work. In many cases, the work–which often boarded on the absurd or tragic–was delivered with a complete straight face, forcing the viewer to decide how they felt about the work.

The Deadpan Exchange Series is probing this ground in a global way. What happens if you start a joke in one country and respond to it in another? Is there an international deadpan language? Is deadpan universal? From a political standpoint, the organizers are concerned with the way the world is becoming increasingly black and white without any room for something gray and muddled. It is important to offer work that actively challenges the viewer to interpret the work for him or herself. And the Deadpan aesthetic offers a way to both engage and challenge the viewer at the same time. The organizers are also interested in bringing a diverse group of artists together from different places throughout the world and starting a dialogue that might not take place outside of formal institutions.

At the end of Deadpan Exchange V, seven Macedonian artists will create reactions to the works of the seven Turkish artists, and these reactions will be exhibited in another country (the location of which is still being determined). There will be 1 more exchange and then a final exhibition in Copenhagen with all the artists’ works in 2012.
